Dyeing with Natural Plants with Elin Pring Haessly
In this class you will learn to dye with plants from nature and learn to appreciate the unique colors obtained from the mostly wild plants surrounding you. This will be a two-day class. On the morning of the first day, we will collect the plants from Elin’s farm field or you can bring your own plants. We will mordant some of the yarn and discuss the most commonly used mordants, but due to the toxicity of some mordants and time restrictions, we might only use alum. We will prepare the plants for dyeing the next day. On the second day, we will dye most of the collected plants. We will discuss over-dyeing some of the colors and why it might be a good idea. We will discuss different fibers, since we will only use protein fibers in this workshop. Please bring a notebook and pen. You will receive instruction papers and samples of dyed yarn.
