Building an Earthen Oven with Ian Miller

Earthen ovens are made out of a mixture of clay-soil, sand, sawdust, straw and firebrick. They’re simple, low-cost and fun to build. After taking this workshop, you’ll soon be baking your own wood-fired bread and pizza in your beautiful new work of art! This one-day workshop will cover earthen oven construction from start to finish. Participants will learn basic oven building methods and techniques including: how to gather raw materials, build foundations, insulate the oven and apply finish plasters. The workshop will also cover how to heat and bake with a wood-fired, earthen oven. This will be a hands-on, labor-intensive workshop where an actual oven will be built. The goal is to give participants the skills, experience and confidence to build their own oven at home.
