The Driftless Experience

The Driftless region has a lot to offer. It truly is a gem. A mecca. When you come to the Driftless for a folk school class, why not take advantage of the whole Driftless experience.

Eat at the Driftless Cafe. Their menu changes every single day based on what’s in season and what the surrounding farmers have to offer. The pizza is amazing and the rest speaks for itself.

Visit the Kickapoo Valley Reserve and tour the ice caves, go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing across the many trails. There are a number of events this winter including a lecture on snowy owls and a guided night hike.
Hang out at the Rooted Spoon Kitchen table. Have a craft cocktail at the Friday night pop-up bar “The Drinkery,” or attend Sunday brunch at the Rooted Spoon.

Stay at a beautiful lodge, cabin, or b&b. Have you checked airbnb for the area? Your magical rural winter get-away is affordable and easy.

Get lost at Driftless Books and Music. Driftless Books is home to the largest collection of used books in the midwest. There is also live music almost every weekend in the warmer months.

Take a stroll on Main Street, Viroqua. Dig through records, see local art, eat a cookie at the food co-op, stop in the main street chamber to see what local events are happening in town. Tangled Hickory  Wine Bar has a great selection of wine and live music on the weekends.

Here’s how your Driftless Dream weekend might look. Roll into town Friday evening and head straight to the Driftless Cafe for the best meal you will eat all year. After dinner, walk two blocks over to the Rooted Spoon for a creative cocktail that sources local fresh ingredients. Play ping-pong and foosball and then head back to your dream winter lodging that you found on airbnb. In the morning, you wake up smiling because it’s so darn peaceful. Head over to your Driftless Folk School class – Spoon Carving, perhaps (January 30th!) – and feel empowered as you learn a new skill and create something beautiful with your own hands. After the class, you may want to rest, or you may want to take a walk in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve (right where your class is held) and watch the winter birds. If it’s the 4th Saturday of the months, you can head over to the La Farge Village Hall for dinner, where the folk school is hosting a pot luck (January 23rd this month)! You are visiting from out of town and didn’t bring anything, but that’s OK because we love being hospitable and always make too much food! Then at 7pm head upstairs to the monthly Contra Dance! You can’t help but join in and dance to the live music and charismatic caller who boosts your confidence as you twirl around the room. You’ll head back to your lodgings with a huge smile and stars in your eyes. Sleep in on Sunday.  Brunch at the Rooted Spoon goes until 1pm.
