Beginner Willow Basketry

Instructor: Annie Zylstra

In this two day class, students will learn to weave a traditional stake and strand basket with an abundant, local, and culturally significant plant material - Willow. The stake and strand style of Willow weaving has deep roots in European traditional culture and because it has never been mechanized, has changed very little in the thousands of years people have been doing it. This form of basketry requires few tools and gives weavers a unique opportunity to form deep relationships with the local plant populations drawn upon for material.

Over the course of the weekend, we will cover material sourcing & preparation and weaving the basket from base to border. By the end of the class, students will have everything they need to continue a Willow basketry practice of their own.

Weaving with Willow requires significant physical strength, focus, and dexterity, so participants should consider any physical limitations before signing up.
