Birch Bark Box Making, with Nicholas WazeeGale

  • Instructor's Home Viola, WI United States (map)

Apply yourself to making one of these ancient and ingenious round boxes of birch bark and carved wood. A design from northern Europe dating back thousands of years, these little boxes can be made airtight and are perfect for salt, seasonings, small tools, and many other uses. Made of a round body of tabbed and locked bark, lid and base carved and fitted, with base secured with wood pegs, these boxes are both simplistic and challenging to make. Be prepared for a full day of cutting, carving, fitting, redoing, and making!
