Ecological Literacy in the Driftless Region
A note from the Instructor, Nicholas WazeeGale:
This foray into learning more about our local beings and ecology will be both highly educational and down to Earth, hands-on, and exploratory. We will visit varied local environs, learn many things about regional mammals, birds, insects, herbs, trees, and fungi that we uncover together, and have dedicated lessons in these beings, their interrelationships, and how we can learn directly from them throughout our lives.
The goals of this program will be to…
Gain knowledgeability of species, their relationships with each other, and their life cycles within the seasons.
Gain skill in interpreting and understanding the scenarios we see in the wilds. This includes everything from predation or feeding signs, to forest composition and succession, to plant communities reflecting aspect/facing of a hillside.
Growing our attention for learning about and observing the Natural World. Our knowledge of Nature can grow pretty quickly with some better attention habits, and these habits begin with being filled with awe and always on the lookout for the next unfolding.
Growing our empathy and engagement with the wilds. This can come about in many forms but often comes of finding things that really catch your interest and going with them, be they birding, foraging, fishing or hunting, tracking, photography, stealth or movement, many paths for many folks.
This is designed for folks new to our local landscape and ecology and naturalist study to those looking to broaden or deepen their knowledge and experience of our local living landscape. Our group size will be small, our adventures will be high and low but not huge in scale, and our lessons will be engaging, dynamic, and supportive. Hope to see you out there!
