Tanning Using Gathered Plant Materials

Instructor: Nicholas WazeeGale

If you have been thinking there must be a way to tan your deer hides with plants of your area, this is your class. "Vegetable" tanning is a slower, steadier and less demanding method than braintanning and yields a heavier, more stout leather with the grain (outer glossy layer) still on. We will learn basic skinning, cleaning of the skin, removal of hair, and then also the alchemy of preparing solutions of tannins from sumac leaves and various tree barks. Finally we will discuss and hopefully "finish" a skin with natural oils. This method works for many animal skins, hair on and hair off, domestic and wild. This process can take a month or more, hides in various stages will be observed and worked for our learning purposes.

Bring a notebook and wear clothes to be outside and potentially get messy!
